Questions About Implant Dentistry
Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, Oakleaf, Orange Park
What is implant dentistry?
Implant dentistry is the placement of dental implants in the jaw. They are artificial tooth roots that anchor replacements for missing teeth.
Dental implants are small titanium alloy cylinders. A projection is attached to their top end which holds a porcelain crown to replace your lost tooth. The jawbone tissue fuses with the implant and makes it a permanent part of your jaw, like a normal tooth root.
What are the benefits of implant dentistry?
Implant dentistry is the preferred method for replacing missing teeth. It eliminates the discomfort and inconvenience of removable dentures and partials. It can also preserve your gums and jawbone, avoiding the sunken look that missing teeth can cause, and helping maintain your youthful appearance.
You can benefit from implant dentistry if you are missing a single tooth, several teeth, or all of your teeth. One or more teeth can be anchored by a dental implant and several implants can hold even an entire mouthful of teeth. If you need or prefer dentures, dental implants can anchor and stabilize them so they do not slip.
Does Dr. Blankenship perform implant dentistry himself or will he send me to a specialist?
In some cases Dr. Blankenship will place your implants himself. If your case is very complex he may refer you to an oral surgeon or periodontist whom he knows and trusts. He has teamed up with some of the top specialists in all of Northern Florida. You will be taken care of with the utmost confidence.
Can anyone have implant dentistry?
Most people with missing teeth can benefit from implant dentistry, but there are a few exceptions. You need to be in good general health, and you need adequate jawbone density, height, and width to securely hold the implant. If you do not have adequate jawbone material a bone graft may be possible.
What are the alternatives to implant dentistry?
If implant dentistry is not right for you, Dr. Blankenship may recommend a dental bridge. Dental bridges are similar to partial dentures, but are cemented in place so they are more comfortable and convenient.
Are dental implants permanent?
Yes. Dental implants are the only truly permanent way to replace missing teeth. The implant itself never needs to be replaced. The artificial tooth attached to it can be replaced should something happen to damage it.
