Tooth Bonding
Jacksonville, Ponte Vedra, Oakleaf, Orange Park
Tooth bonding is used to protect and seal your teeth and for cosmetic restorations. Depending on your unique dental needs, Dr. Blankenship may recommend dental bonding as an alternative to porcelain veneers.
Understanding tooth bonding
Today’s tooth bonding uses beautiful, tooth-colored material. While many of the applications for dental bonding overlap with the uses for porcelain veneers, the process is quite different.
In bonding, Dr. Blankenship applies composite resin paste to your teeth in small increments. He carefully sculpts it to the precise shape and thickness needed to cover or restore your teeth. The bonding material is hardened with a curing light and then polished.
The material used in dental bonding is a form of what we use in tooth colored fillings.
Uses for dental bonding
Dental bonding is a versatile cosmetic dentistry solution that gives you fast results.
It can be used to fill and seal chips and cracks, restoring the beauty of your smile and stopping the sensitivity and pain. It can also seal teeth that have been damaged by tooth erosion, covering and preventing discoloration and eliminating the sensitivity caused by eroding tooth enamel.
Tooth bonding can be used to build up more of a tooth than dental veneers. Gaps are corrected by building up the surrounding teeth to fill the space. If you have a gap between your teeth that is too large for porcelain veneers, or a broken tooth that is missing too much too material for veneers, Dr. Blankenship may recommend tooth bonding.
Advantages and disadvantages of tooth bonding
Dental bonding is a beautiful and durable solution for many common cosmetic dental problems. As an alternative to porcelain veneers it has some advantages and disadvantages.
You may prefer dental bonding if:
- You need to build up a large portion of a tooth or fill a large gap
- You want faster results – dental bonding only requires one office visit
- You are looking for a less expensive solution than porcelain veneers
When possible, most patients prefer to use porcelain veneers because:
- Porcelain is more beautiful and natural looking than bonding
- It is also more stain-resistant than bonding
- Bonding is very strong and durable, but when you have your teeth professionally cleaned you must work with a hygienist who has experience with tooth bonding or your bonding could be damaged
